Lalín’s cocido has been one of the most deeply rooted dishes in the area for decades. Made with pork products from home-slaughtered pigs, along with legumes and vegetables, it continues to be cooked and enjoyed today.

During the Feira do Cocido in Lalín, many restaurants participate by offering a traditional cocido menu at affordable prices. There is also a charitable version of the dish.

This rich and flavorful stew is slow-cooked and includes ingredients such as chickpeas, the famous “unto” (a cured pork fat used for flavor), various pork cuts including tail, ribs, ham hock, head, and trotters, as well as vegetables like turnip greens and potatoes, and different types of chorizo, including meat and onion varieties.

What to See and Do at the Feira do Cocido in Lalín

In addition to enjoying the famous cocido in local restaurants or at a communal meal, such as the charitable cocido, the event is packed with activities for all to enjoy. The streets come alive with marching bands, street parades, and floats. In some areas, traditional female cooks, dressed in historical attire, prepare cocido in front of visitors.

There are also musical performances and children’s workshops to ensure families and young ones have fun. Some activities extend beyond the fair itself, continuing throughout the month or the entire cocido season, such as sports competitions and concerts. Another example is the Mercadelicadeza artisan food fair, which is usually held weeks after the Feira do Cocido.

The festive atmosphere spreads through the streets and hospitality venues, creating a family-friendly celebration that people of all ages can enjoy.

The fair opens with a speech (pregón) delivered by a prominent figure. In 2025, this honor will go to Takahiro Nakame, the Japanese ambassador to Spain, as Pontevedra welcomes many tourists from Japan, where the Feira do Cocido de Lalín is gaining popularity year after year.

The event schedule for this year has not yet been released, so we’ll have to wait for further details.
